College Night 2011: Feb. 9 at Abe Montoya Rec Center

New Mexico Highlands University and Luna Community College will sponsor the 12th annual College Night 2011 on Feb. 9 from 5 – 7:30 p.m. at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center at 1751 North Grand Ave. in Las Vegas.  

“College Night gives high school students a chance to talk to faculty, and gather information about different disciplines and career paths,” Gil Gonzalez, director of recruitment said. “We also want students to know about the changes that are coming in financial aid packages so they can maximize their opportunities to help fund their higher education.”

HU Science Profs Help Roy Students With Science Fair Projects

Students from tiny Roy, N.M., worked with science professors at New Mexico Highlands University Jan. 21 to get expert assistance with their science fair projects. They also got a first-hand look at cutting-edge research labs.
 
Twenty-four of the 27 students in Roy Middle/Senior High School participated in the science day at Highlands.

2011 Winterfest “A Mariachi Valentine’s Concert” Feb. 12 in Ilfeld

Winterfest 2011 at New Mexico Highlands University presents, “A Mariachi Valentine’s Concert,” Sat., Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in the university’s historic Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.

“This will be an evening of fabulous, colorful mariachi and ballet folklorico entertainment for the whole family,” Donna Martinez, Ilfeld Auditorium manager said. “The concert features some of New Mexico’s finest performers.”

HU football players lend a helping hand to animal charity

Members of New Mexico Highlands’ football team help unload a donated shipment of dog food Jan. 21. The food, donated by Sam’s Club, will go to help the city animal shelter and a local animal food bank.

Highlands Athletes Named to RMAC All-Academic Teams

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Awards were released on 1/25 and Highlands' Trent Evins has been named the RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. This is the second straight year that a Cowboy pitcher has received this recognition. Drew Vassil received this honor is 2010 and led the Cowboys pitching staff to their 2010 RMAC regular season and tournament championships. Evins looks to fill that role as the Cowboys leader on the mound for the 2011 season.

Manzano Named RMAC Player of the Week

Thomas Manzano has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Baden Player of the Week. Manzano earned this distinctive honor after his 34 point performance against in-state RMAC rival Western New Mexico University on 1/22. This is the third time that Manzano has received this honor.

Cowboys Corral Mustangs 115-99

The Highlands Cowboys continued their winning ways on 1/22 as they hammered in-state RMAC rival the Mustangs of Western New Mexico University 115-99 in front of a raucous home crowd. The Cowboys and the Mustangs would play a tightly contested game throughout the first half. The Cowboys would pull ahead in the final minutes of the first half to lead 45-37 going into halftime. In the second half, the Cowboys would run away with it as they would lead by as much as 25 points in the second half en route to their third straight win. With the win, the Cowboys improve to 13-4 overall and 9-4 in RMAC play.
