Cowgirls Drop UCCS in RMAC Series Three Games to One

The Cowgirl Softball team took to the road to take on the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions. The Cowgirls won the series taking three of the four games. This is the first RMAC series the Cowgirls have won since Head Coach Shellie Broyles took to the helm in the 2008 season.

The Cowgirls took game one in convincing fashion with a 13-4 score. Leading the Cowgirls to their first win on the weekend was freshman pitcher Melissa Martinez. She pitched the entire six innings and recorded 13 strikeouts. The Cowgirls hit it big in the second inning as they scored eight runs in that inning alone. The bases were loaded as Chanel Ewing approached the plate. She hit a grand slam homerun, her first for the season, right over the centerfield fence to bring in four runs. Taking notes from Ewing was Tanya Groff as she homered over the right center fence soon after for her third homerun of the season. Late in the sixth inning Kelsey Groff followed the homer suit as she knocked one over the left center fence line.

Cowboys Take Series from Mesa State Two Games to One

The #22 Highlands Cowboys completed their second straight RMAC series win of the season on 3/6 as they split in a double header with the Mavericks of Mesa State College. The Cowboys had won the first game of the series on 3/5 by a final score of 8-3 and would fall in game two 21-4 but would rebound and get the series win 18-4 in game two on 3/6. The Cowboys would then play the Mavericks in a non-RMAC game on 3/7 and fall 12-8. The Cowboys are now 12-4 on the season and 5-1 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will take the diamond again on 3/9 against the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo in a non-RMAC showdown at 2:00 pm in Las Vegas, N.M.

The Cowboys were up and down all series long, but held on for the series win. The Cowboys finished the series with a .340 batting average. As a team, the Cowboys racked up 13 doubles and six home runs over the weekend series. The team leads the RMAC in numerous categories, most notably; RBI’s (180), Doubles (58) and Triples (6). The Cowboys are off to a great start and are currently tied for the top spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings with Metro State College. Both teams are 5-1 in the RMAC on the season.
