Leading Irish Band ‘Slide’ in Concert March 23 in Ilfeld

New Mexico Highlands University presents Slide, a leading Irish band, in concert March 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the university’s historic Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.
 
Slide is known for its unique traditional Irish music that contains powerful contemporary elements. The Irish Times hailed Slide as, “traditional musicians with attitude, with songs that range from soulful and sorrowful to contagiously energetic.”

Fiesta de la Hispanidad March 26 in Ilfeld Auditorium

The 17th Annual New Mexico Highlands University Fiesta de la Hispanidad brings music and dance center stage at Ilfeld Auditorium March 26, 6:30 p.m., for this popular community celebration of Hispanic culture.
 
The cost for the event is $4, and there will be free refreshments and door prizes. The university’s historic Ilfeld Auditorium is at 900 University Ave.

Historic Highlands photos from Donnelly Library special collection.

World Literature Reading Group
Donnelly Library will be building on the success of last year’s reading group this spring by launching a new reading and discussion group on World literature.
The series will consist of discussions on four books (dates and books are listed below). Program books are available at the library.
Brandon Kempner, assistant professor of English, will lead a discussion of the book at each session. Kempner teaches American literature at Highlands. He has taught a wide variety of classes on multi-ethnic literature.

All discussions will begin at 7 p.m. in the Despertarse Café.

Sayers Named RMAC / Rawlings Pitcher of the Week

After a stellar appearance on the mound for the Cowboys against the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers, Kyle Sayers has been named the RMAC/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week. Sayers joins fellow Highlands pitchers Trent Evins and Jason Sirak in receiving this honor.

Cowboys Run Past Greyhounds 3-1

The Highlands Cowboys defeated the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds 3-1 on 3/15 in Portales, N.M. The Cowboys would strike first scoring one run in the fourth inning, but the Greyhounds would answer back with a score in the seventh inning to knot the score up at one apiece. The Cowboys would then rally in the eighth inning as Justin Kaid would knock two runs in with a single down the left field line to make the score 3-1.

Graham Closes Out Career in Style with Three All-American Awards

Highlands University senior Angella Graham completed her collegiate career by winning three All-American awards at the NCAA II National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., March 11-12. Graham added a third place in the triple jump (12.55M), fourth place in the Pentathlon (3644 points) and eighth place in the long jump (5.69M) to her long list of honors at HU.

Lopers Edge Out Cowboys 14-12

The Highlands Cowboys were edged out by the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers 14-12 on 3/13 in game four of their RMAC weekend series. The Lopers would jump out on the Cowboys early with and 11-0 advantage through two innings played. The Highlands' bats woke up in the third inning as they would tally five runs in the third inning to chip away at the sizeable UNK lead to make it 11-5 going into the fourth inning.
