Fiesta de la Hispanidad March 26 in Ilfeld Auditorium
The 17th Annual New Mexico Highlands University Fiesta de la Hispanidad brings music and dance center stage at Ilfeld Auditorium, March 26, 6:30 p.m., for this popular community celebration of Hispanic culture.
 
The cost for the event is $4, and there will be free refreshments and door prizes. The university’s historic Ilfeld Auditorium is at 900 University Ave.

Thomas Mishler Scholarship Recital on March 27
Four of New Mexico Highlands University’s top music students will perform in the Thomas Mishler Scholarship Recital, March 27 at 3 p.m., in the Margaret Kennedy Alumni Hall, 905 University Ave.
 
The scholarship recital will feature Nicole Robinson, Timothy Martinez, Dennis Montano, and Joshua Armendariz.

HU Recycling Center Reopens on Saturdays; Now Also Accepts Tin
The New Mexico Highlands University Recycling Center has reopened on Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., and is also open Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
 
The recycling center has received heavy use since the university opened it to the public in November. The center is at 9th and Reynolds, west of the university’s Wilson Complex and behind the tennis courts parking lot.

Band Fest 2011 at Ilfeld April 3 Features Las Vegas and University Bands
Outstanding Las Vegas middle and high school band students will perform with the New Mexico Highlands University concert band at Band Fest 2011, April 3 at 2 p.m., in the university’s historic Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.
 
The participating band directors call the concert an historic occasion that they hope will build a stronger sense of community between Las Vegas City Schools and West Las Vegas School District.

Zias Sweep Cowgirls in Non-Conference Action
The Highlands Cowgirls lost both games of their non-conference double header against Eastern New Mexico University on 3/22. The Cowgirls lost the first game by a score of 8-4. The game was scoreless through two innings of play, then in the top of the third the Zias scored four runs, but the Cowgirls answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own.

Cowgirls Split Road Series Against Skyhawks
The Highlands Cowgirls earned a split in their second double header against Fort Lewis on 3/20. The Cowgirls lost a close one in game one of the double header. The Skyhawks took the lead off a first inning grand slam, but Ashley Paiz hit a triple in the top of the second to drive in three runs and even the score at four apiece.

Cowboys Rally Past Cougars 18-17
The HighlandsU Cowboys staged a late comeback to edge out the Colorado Christian Cougars 18-17 on 3/19. The Cowboys would score five runs in the final innings to pull ahead of the Cougars and win their third straight game on the weekend. In their final game of the weekend the Cowboys and Cougars would end the seventh inning tied at 14 apiece, but would have to suspend the game due to lack of daylight.

Cowgirls Split First Double Header Against Fort Lewis
The Highlands Cowgirls split their first double header against Fort Lewis College on 3/19.  The Cowgirls struggled at the plate early in game one, only able to generate three hits through the first six innings. In the top of the seventh inning, down by five, the Cowgirls' bats rallied to score four runs on five hits but came up just short dropping the first game to the Skyhawks 5-4. The Cowgirls' bats carried over to game two of the double header.

You might have missed out on having one of the first 100 plates, but you can still show your Cowboy pride! Just visit the Motor Vehicle Department to pick up a plate. Only $37 of which $25 is returned to the university for faculty, staff and campus projects.
