Parents Weekend

 

New Mexico Highlands welcomes our students' parents to campus Sept. 22-23. We've created an exciting, informative and fun weekend so you can see first-hand what our campus life is like! 

Morning Program 9 – 11:30 a.m.

Welcome – President Jim Fries, Las Vegas Mayor Alfonso Ortiz, and Dean of Students Fidel Trujillo.

Faculty Expectations Q & A – Sociology Professor Tom Ward and other faculty members.

Academic & Student Support  – Academic Support Director Thomasinia Ortiz-Gallegos and Student Support Services Director Roland Salas.

Financial Aid – Financial Aid Director Eileen Sedillo and Adviser Susan Taylor.

Campus Security & Safety Initiatives – Police Chief Donato Sena.

Campus Violence Prevention Program – CVVP Director Kimberly Valdez.

Mock College Class – Jill Baskerville, former visiting sociology professor.

Campus Tours– 11:30 – 12 p.m., including a look at the new Student Center under construction. Resident hall assistants and student ambassadors will lead the tours.

Tailgate Party– 12 – 1 p.m. in Melody Park, catered by A’viands, with a beef brisket “Cowboy Wrap” and more.

Football Game– 1 p.m. at Perkins Stadium, Cowboys v. Colorado School of Mines.

Barbecue Dinner– 4 – 6:30 p.m. at the university’s Fifth Quarter Grill at the Gene Torres Golf Course catered by Phat Matt’s Smokin’ Barbecue of Las Vegas. The menu features St. Louis style porks ribs, smoked sausage, cornbread muffins, potato salad, fruit salad, and more.

The Low Down Daddies, a popular local blues band, will perform at the barbecue. One parent will win a Highlands football helmet and football, both autographed by the team.

Sept. 23 Brunch– 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Central Park catered by A’viands, featuring cinnamon rolls, ham frittata, Dijon chicken, fruit smoothies, spinach salad, and more. The crowd-pleasing student DJ Patrice Fote will provide music and one parent will win an iPad for their student.  

The $25 cost per person for Parents Weekend includes the Sept. 22 continental breakfast, gift bag, tailgate party, football game ticket, and Sept. 23 brunch.

The cost for the Sept. 22 barbecue at the Fifth Quarter Grill is $10 per parent.

Parents are encouraged to pre-register and pay via credit card by calling the Housing Office at 505-454-3193. Parents may also register and pay Sept. 22 in Ilfeld Auditorium at 8:30 a.m.

Local hotels offering discounts for Parents Weekend include Day’s Inn, Best Western Plus, and Knights Inn.
