Admission Procedures

Admission – Undergraduate

  1. Complete Application for Undergraduate Admission (degree-seeking).
  2. For social work majors, send with check, made out to New Mexico Highlands University, for $20 (non-refundable $15 application and $5 matriculation fee) to: Office of Admission, New Mexico Highlands University, Box 9000, Las Vegas, N.M. 87701-9000. Request that ALL official college/university transcripts be sent there.
  3. For business, accounting, criminal justice, and education majors: request that ALL official college/university transcripts be sent to you in a sealed envelope.
  4. Bring your completed application, official transcripts, and check for the $15 non-refundable application fee to the Rio Rancho Center. We will copy them and send the originals to the Admission Office.
  5. To check on the status of your application, call the Office of Admission at 505.454.3434 (non-degree students), 454.3439 (transfer students), or call toll free at 877.850.9064 and ask for that office.
  6. Upon your admittance, you will receive letters from the director of admissions and from the director of the center at Rio Rancho and transfer information, which includes the list of courses accepted and an evaluation of transfer credit toward the core curriculum.
  7. When you have received your transcript evaluation, you are encouraged to make an appointment to see an adviser at Rio Rancho, so we can discuss with you the courses that were accepted, how they fit into your program of study, and your remaining program requirements.

Non-Degree Admission

  1. Complete a non-degree Highlands undergraduate application which you can download here. Non-degree admission allows you to pursue credit courses without meeting many of the requirements for admission to a degree program. Please be aware that there are limits as to how many credits you can take under a non-degree status and later apply them to a degree program.
  2. Submit your application and a check for $20 (non-refundable $15 application and $5 matriculation fees), made out to Highlands, to the Center at Rio Rancho. The address is 1700 Grande Court, Suite 100, Rio Rancho, N.M. 87124.
  3. IMPORTANT: Students admitted in non-degree status are NOT eligible for financial assistance.

Admission – Graduate

  1. Complete Graduate Application for Admission (which you can download here) and secure the following items:

    •  Official transcripts from each college/university attended
    •  Statement of educational goals/objectives
    •  Two letters of recommendation
    •  Test scores (if required. Check Graduate Catalog)
    •  Check for $20 (non-refundable $15 application and $5 matriculation fees) made out to New Mexico Highlands University
  2. Request that ALL official college/university transcripts be sent to you in a sealed envelope.
  3. Bring ALL your application materials to the main office at the center. We will copy them and get the originals to the Graduate Office at the main campus.
  4. To check on the status of your application, call the Graduate Office at 505.454.3266 or call toll free 877.850.9064 and ask for that office.
  5. Speak with an academic adviser to assist you with classes (call for an appointment at 891.2046).

Enrollment – Education Licensure Programs

  1. Apply to the Teacher Education Program before or during first semester at Highlands. Unofficial transcripts or copies of transcripts are required. Bring your teacher education application, disclosure statement, official licensure form, and transcripts with a check, made out to New Mexico Highlands University, for $20 (non-refundable $15 application and $5 matriculation fees) to the Rio Rancho Center.
  2. Plan to take the New Mexico Teacher Assessments (NMTA). You take and pass the Basic Skills and General Knowledge portions of this test before you can apply for student teaching.
  3. Speak with an academic adviser to assist you with classes (call for an appointment at 891.2046).
  4. To register for classes, complete a Registration/Admission Form for New/Returning Students.
  5. To check on the status of your teacher education application, call the School of Education at 505.454.3357 or toll free at 877.850.9064 and ask for that school.

You can pick up admission and other necessary forms at the Rio Rancho center from the education liaison, the education special projects coordinator, or the academic adviser.
