English Department Offers Geek Week April 9 – 14

Las Vegas, N.M. – The Highlands University English Department offers a smorgasbord of creative endeavors during its first Geek Week April 9 – 14.

“We are celebrating the creative and scholarly activities that we love in the English Department and sharing our enthusiasm for literature, writing and much more,” said Donna Woodford-Gormley, department chair. “We’ll have a fun week of dramatic performances, readings, roundtables, hands-on projects, engaging games, and food.”

Woodford-Gormley said she hopes the Las Vegas and campus communities will turn out for Geek Week.

All the activities take place in the university’s Douglas Hall at 805 University Ave. on the second floor.

Monday, April 9:

  • 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. – New Mexico Review Presentation
  • 1 – 2 p.m. – Heavy Metal for Geeks

Tuesday, April 10:

  • 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.  – Vampire Play
  • 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. – Taming of the Shrew in a Box
  • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. – Nonfiction Class Reading

Wednesday, April 11:

  • 1 – 1:45 p.m. –  Introduction to Fiction Dramatic Reading
  • 2:15 – 3:15 p.m. Medieval Play

Thursday, April 12:

  • 11 a.m – 12:15 p.m. – King Lear in a Box
  • 3 – 4 p.m. – Shakespearian Insults
  • 4 – 5 p.m. – Performance of The Reading of (the) Will
  • 6 – 9 p.m. – Role Playing

Friday, April 13:

  • 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Graduate Student Symposium
  • 2 – 4 p.m. ­– Faculty Debate/Roundtable
  • 4 – 5 p.m.  – Potluck and Open Microphone
