Earlier this month, New Mexico Highlands University experienced a ransomware incident.  In response, the University took the impacted systems offline and commenced an investigation. The investigation is ongoing, and several University systems are still offline, including the MyNMHU portal.  New Mexico Highlands University is working methodically to restore its systems as quickly and as safely as possible. In the interim, we have canceled classes through Sunday, April 14. As the investigation and restoration processes progress, we will provide updates about the resumption of classes.

Once classes resume, the NMHU faculty will work with each class to determine the best path forward for class completion. Classes will not extend beyond the scheduled end date. NMHU’s graduation process and commencement ceremony will proceed as originally scheduled and still occur on the original dates.

NMHU publishes updates to its community via email, text messages, robocalls, and the NMHU website to ensure our students, staff, faculty, and community members have the best and most current information. Those seeking the most current information about this event should visit nmhu.edu/eoc.

To assist with ensuring all timesheets are submitted and approved in advance of the coming payroll run, HR/Payroll has extended the deadline for approval to 3 p.m. today.

HR/Payroll has set up phone numbers for employees and supervisors to get information about accessing Paycom. Several HR/Payroll staff are assigned specifically to field these calls. We ask that these numbers be used only by employees not on campus in Las Vegas so those off-site can complete their submissions and approvals as quickly as possible. Campus employees are highly encouraged to visit the Purple Pub in the Student Union Building.  Both HR and Payroll will be on-site to help employees gain access to Paycom and timecards.

To Access Paycom: For all Center and Remote employees to gain access to Paycom, please contact HR at 505-454-3393 or 505-454-3243.

To Update Timecards: Once Center and Remote employees have access to Paycom, if hourly employees need help with timecard entry, please call the Payroll Dept at 505-429-3836.

We are working hard to make sure all employees and student work-study employees are paid on time. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this network issue.

Updated 4/7/2024 7:50 PM

All employees should continue to consult with their supervisor regarding work assignments.

Campus phones have been restored. Campus internet connectivity, VPN, and authentication remain unavailable.

Updated 4/7/2024 2:05 PM

Students and faculty are dependent on technologies that require internet access to properly function, and due to the current lack of availability of that technology, all classes will remain canceled through Tuesday, April 9. We will provide another update on Tuesday regarding the resumption of classes.

The Information Technology Service office continues to install security software on university computers as it works to restore services. This work also requires the university network, and thus internet access on our campus and centers, to remain unavailable.

Once network service has been restored, students should work with their professors to catch up on any missing coursework that is a direct result of the outage.

Registration for summer and fall courses will resume once  Banner access has been restored.

A reminder to all NMHU employees and work-study students: All employee timesheet submissions must be completed by Monday, April 8, at 10 a.m., and supervisor’s approvals must be completed by Monday, April 8, by 11 a.m. Human Resources and Payroll staff will be at the Purple Pub in the Student Center starting at 8 a.m. on Monday to assist. They will provide Paycom login credentials for both employees and supervisors.

Work Study Students, Please Note: If you did not work due to the network disturbance, please enter the time you would have worked for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, April 3-5. Please coordinate with your supervisor to make up the time before the end of the semester. If you actually worked April 3-5, enter your time as usual. All punch change requests for work-study students must be completed by Monday at 10 a.m., and supervisor approvals must be completed by 11 a.m.

We are working hard to make sure all employees and student work-study employees are paid on time. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this network issue.

Updated 4/5/2024 5:35 PM

NMHU cybersecurity vendors have officially verified that the network issue our institution is currently experiencing is, in fact, a ransom attack. We are one of several state entities recently attacked, and we are still working to determine the full extent of the attack. To that end, ITS has begun installing software on university computers to assist with the investigation. This software is tightly restricted and monitors only for malicious activity. We thank you for your patience during this process. We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.

Class schedule and business operation information will be updated on Sunday, April 7.

Best,

NMHU Emergency Operations Center

While classes have been canceled through Sunday, Donnelly Library will remain open and staffed during our regular semester hours. The library, like the rest of campus, does not have Internet access, but books and other materials can be checked out.

Friday, April 5, 2024: 8:00 am-5:00 pm
Saturday, April 6, 2024: closed
Sunday, April 7, 2024: 1:00 pm. – 10:00 pm

Updated 4/4/2024 1:30 PM

ITS continues to work to restore all campus services. Further investigation into the cause of the issue is underway. While this work continues, we have several announcements:

  • All classes have been canceled through Sunday, including asynchronous and all NMHU centers (Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, and Farmington).
  • All employees should continue to consult their supervisor regarding reporting to campus. Work can continue to take place from home for non-critical employees, and administrative leave has been approved from April 3-5 for employees. It will be automatically applied to the timesheets of those not reporting to their worksite.
  • The Code Blue emergency poles on campus have been temporarily disabled until this issue is resolved. Each pole prominently displays the current NMHU Police Dispatch phone number (505.426-6763).
  • We’ll distribute detailed information regarding access to the Paycom payroll system this afternoon in a separate communication. In the meantime, however, Human Resources is currently providing staff at Purple Pub computer lab in room 213 of the Student Union building for employees on the main campus to assist with Paycom functions, and ITS has set up computers dedicated to employee log-in functions there as well.

As we navigate this technical issue, know that our core principles guide the effort of the Emergency Operations Center:

  • Safeguarding our students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.
  • Continuing our core mission: teaching our students.
  • Striving to have the least impact on our students and employees.

Be sure to visit nmhu.edu/eoc to review all updates regarding this continually changing situation. Again, thank you for your patience.

The Campus Police and Security Department has temporarily closed its switchboard. To reach campus police dispatch for both emergency and non-emergency situations, call 505-426-6763.

Updated 4/3/2024, 3:27 PM

NMHU Campus Community,

Information Technology Services (ITS) department has identified a technology issue that has impacted our campus portal authentication functions. ITS is working to restore the impacted services.

Out of an abundance of caution, NMHU is canceling all classes scheduled to start after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, and all classes on Thursday, April 4. Employees should consult their supervisors to determine if they are required to be on campus for both the rest of Wednesday and for Thursday.

Please do not contact ITS for support at this time; the department is focusing all its resources on resolving this issue. ITS identified this issue early and has added substantial extra security over the past five years to the NMHU network in the event of this type of occurrence. We will restore full service as quickly as possible.

Further information will be posted to the NMHU website (nmhu.edu) as it becomes available.

Thank you for your patience,

NMHU Emergency Operations Center
