Thirty-two local golfers played in the 2008 Gene Torres Piedras Classic Oct. 11 and 12 in the first tournament since Highlands University opened its newly-designed Gene Torres Golf Course in August.”The new golf course showed its teeth and gave the players a good challenge,” said Steve Watson, the new golf pro for the course. “The weather was not cooperative, but the players were hardy and enthusiastic. It’s nice to renew this longtime tournament. Next year we plan to hold it sometime in the summer and increase participation.” Watson added that his thanks go to Larry Franken and Rudy Vigil for their hard work in organizing the tournament.
