Social Work began as a community organizing and visiting helper profession. It differentiated itself from the other admirable professions of psychology/psychiatry by virtue of its emphasis on organizing and building the capacities of communities, movement, family systems; and by linking civic-faith based academic health organizations together in partnership. The fundamental skills of community organizing are still critically important to social workers, counselors, family therapists and psychologists since all know that the individual client is inextricably influenced by the cultural and community system in which he finds himself. This workshop reviews the foundational behaviors, attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary for any professional helper to work effectively in and with community systems.
