What is the difference between Spanish as a heritage language classes at Highlands and Beginning Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 classes at Highlands?
The Spanish as a heritage language courses (111, 112, 211, 212) teach Spanish as a heritage language, whereas the Spanish as a second language courses (101, 102, 201, 202) teach Spanish as a second or foreign language.
Both the beginning Spanish courses and the Spanish as a heritage language courses will guide students in controlling standard grammatical structures of the Spanish language. However, students who consider Spanish their heritage language and enroll in Spanish 101 and Spanish 102 often resent being drilled on pronunciation and structures they already control. The students’ language skills, experience, and cultural heritage are not designed as part of the curriculum in these classes.
The Spanish as a heritage language courses begin with validating the skills and experience students already possess, and identify skills which need strengthening.
